QRP To The Field (QRPTTF 2014)

Today is the annual QRP To The Field (QRPTTF 2014). It's "...an annual operating event to encourage QRPers to get out of the house and operate portable “from the field,” and of course, have fun. SOTA stations also participate for extra activity... QRPTTF encourages participation by QRP hams of all skill levels. CW speeds are usually in the 13-18 wpm range. [It's] administered solely through the QRP-L reflector." (QRPTTF 2014). Here's my update ...

QRPTTF 2014 was scheduled just a few days before Cinco de Mayo -- a day that's evolved into a celebration of [Mexican] Hispanic heritage, culture, food, music, and pride - a fiesta. So, the theme for QRPTTF 2014 was "an on-the-air QRP fiesta with a little Spanish flair."

I hoped to visit Rock Creek Park (US Park Service) in our nation's capital and to offer Q's from Washington, DC. This would have been my first-ever QRPTTF activation. Unfortunately, I'm recovering from a nasty case of "Montezuma's Revenge" after a trip to Costa Rica in early April. After two solid weeks in bed and then another week recovering, it seemed unwise to travel afield. My contingency plan was to operate my KX3 using battery/solar power from the back yard.

The HF bands were very quiet as of 8am. Then, unexpected household issues emerged, so I was never able to get my field station activated for the contest. I hope to get "to the field" soon and look forward to QRPTTF next year!

  1. Sorry to hear you weren't able to participate in this year's event. There are several more field events coming up that you might find interesting. Besides the ARRL Field Day, there's Flight of the Bumblebees, SYBO, Skeeter Hunt, QRP Afield, and the Peanut Power Sprint. Lots of opportunities! Hope to work you in one (or more) of them.
