QRP Ops in the Back Yard

July 27, 2013 - HF bands were not especially lively here in Washington, DC. There were several spots on the Cluster and DX Maps, but that didn't translate into what I was actually "hearing" earlier today. It seems radio wave propagation on HF Bands has been unusual lately. Signals are inconsistent and sometimes propagation seems to be "one way" ... meaning signals are strong and readable at point "A", yet station at point "B" isn't able to copy. I believe this is what some call "One Way Propagation." This propagation seemed far more pervasive today (on 15 and 20 meters) than usual.

I worked three stations participating in the RSGB IOTA Contest today:

     - NR5M     1647 UTC   20m    SSB

     - CO2GG  1728 UTC   20m    SSB
     - PJ4NX    1815 UTC   20m    SSB

Update 5pm: A storm is moving in now; but the weather was pleasant earlier today - sunny, warm and breezy. The forecast isn't looking too good for the remainder of the weekend in terms of QRP ops. The region needs some rain, so it's good to see precipitation. Rain is slapping on the windows, the wind is howling and thunder is booming. I hope the power stays on!

Update 6:30pm: The storms have passed and all is now quiet. I've ordered a favorite pizza, making a salad and watching some news programming on WETA/PBS. Maybe I'll check the DX Cluster to see how the HF bands are doing ... It just might be a good evening to sneak in a few more WAS QRP contacts.
